Welcome to 7th grade science
and say hello to pill bugs!
During the month of September students will spend time applying the skills of the scientific method to learning “Everything You Wanted to Know About Pill Bugs, But Were Afraid to Ask!”
Studying the correct way to use the microscope will round out our first five weeks.
Next, we will be discussing the historical development of the classification system. We will learn how to use a taxonomic key to identify organisms and learn about the characteristics of organisms in the various kingdoms.
Then it will be time to delve into the intricacies of the single cell. What are its parts and how does it work are some of the questions we will ask.
Viruses and bacteria will be the focus in class upon our return from Christmas break. Students will have a better understanding of what causes the cold and flu outbreaks so many have to suffer through this time of year.
All of that in a drop of water!! Students will have an opportunity to explore the microscopic world around us in February. Using the “ELMO” technology, every student will have a chance to see paramecium, euglena, and the amazing amoeba, even if there is “nothing” on their own slide.
March is the month of invertebrates. We will begin to explore the animal kingdom. 90% of this kingdom is made up of these unusual creatures with no backbone; sponges, jellyfish, and octopus just to name a few. The highlight of invertebrate study is the dissection of the earthworm!
Through April and May we will be finishing our studies of the organisms that surround us. We will complete our study of the animal kingdom by looking at birds and mammals. Our final dissection will be the ever popular frog dissection!
